Project Background and Site Constraints

Solar lighting is especially effective in remote utility environments like the City of Pleasanton’s 8.5-million-gallon water tank station located in a mountainous, open area. The site had ongoing security concerns, including trespassing and graffiti, which led the city to first install perimeter fencing as a baseline security measure.

To further enhance protection, the City of Pleasanton contacted SOLTECH to conduct a site survey with the Lead Utilities System Operator. The goal was to evaluate whether solar lighting could be installed along the fenceline at the entrance to improve visibility and deter unauthorized access, without the need for trenching or grid connection.

Solar lighting was an ideal fit for this application because it eliminates the need for electrical infrastructure, significantly reducing installation disruption, permitting complexity, and long-term energy costs. For remote municipal facilities, this approach provides a practical and sustainable alternative to traditional grid-tied lighting systems.

Enhanced Safety and Security

Following the site visit, SOLTECH’s in-house lighting design team completed a photometric analysis of the entrance area. Based on the layout and spacing of the existing poles, the recommended solution was three SUNLIKE 30W solar area lighting fixtures—one mounted on each of the three fence line poles at the entrance.

The system was designed with motion-sensing capability and autonomous operation, allowing the lights to remain in low-power mode until activity is detected. When motion is triggered, the fixtures instantly illuminate the entrance zone, improving visibility and acting as a deterrent to trespassers.

The City of Pleasanton reviewed the design and approved the installation based on its effectiveness, simplicity, and ability to operate independently from the grid.

Site Conditions and Solar Advantages

The water tank station is in an open, elevated mountainous area with no surrounding trees or obstructions. These ideal solar conditions ensure consistent sun exposure throughout the day, supporting reliable charging performance and dependable nighttime operation year-round.

Because the system is fully self-contained, solar lighting offers a low-maintenance solution for remote infrastructure sites. With no wiring, trenching, or external power dependency, municipalities benefit from reduced maintenance requirements and fewer long-term operational challenges.

The SUNLIKE 30W solar area lighting fixtures are designed for autonomous performance in outdoor environments, making them well-suited for critical infrastructure locations such as water storage facilities where reliability is essential.
