Short Hills Train Station

Short Hills Train Station

About the project

Train Station Background

NJ TRANSIT is New Jersey’s public transportation company. Covering a service area of 5,325 square miles, NJ TRANSIT is the nation’s third-largest provider of bus, rail, and light rail transit, linking major points in New Jersey, New York, and Philadelphia. The NJ TRANSIT’s mission is similar to public transportation in other areas. Its mission is to provide safe, reliable, comfortable, convenient, and cost-effective transit service to people. To help realize this mission, they reached out to SOLTECH and inquired about installing solar lights at the Short Hills train station in New Jersey.

Design & Planning

During the time the Short Hills train station was built, there were no plans of installing lighting fixtures in the area. This is evident because before the city reached out to SOLTECH, there were no preexisting poles on the property. The city didn’t know if they wanted a solar or on-grid lighting solution.

When adding on-grid lighting to an area that previously did not have any, there are sure to be many unavoidable obstacles. In contrast to solar lighting, On-grid lighting includes much more than just mounting the fixtures onto a pole. Below are some of the extra costs associated when installing tradition lighting fixtures,

· Trenching costs

· Wiring costs

· Annual electricity costs

In other words, for this specific project, an on-grid lighting solution was not optimal. On the other hand, due to the simple installation and cheaper installation costs, a solar lighting solution was more optimal. To read more about the cost breakdown of solar versus on-grid lighting solutions, read the case study we did for the Bad Creek Hydroelectric Station project.

SOLTECH Solution

SOLTECH provided 8 SUNLIKE 30W to the Short Hills train station. As pathway lights, SUNLIKE has a dusk-to-dawn sensor on its solar panel. They will automatically turn on at dusk and light up the perimeters for security, deterring crime in the area.

SUNLIKE provides professional light quality while being economical, efficient, user-friendly, and easy to install. With an innovative and versatile all-in-one design, the SUNLIKE is perfect for backyards, perimeters, paths, roads, or flood lighting installs.
